Chennai Super Kings

Having won the IPL and Champions League last year, Chennai did everything they could to retain as many players as they possibly could.

The result was that no less than 11 Super Kings players have stayed on with the franchise, most of them key players. Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, India batsmen Suresh Raina and Murali Vijay and South African all-rounder Albie Morkel were all retained prior to the auction.

Their one disappointment, losing out on Muttiah Muralitharan, could turn out to be a blessing in disguise as the off-spinner struggles with injuries at the end of his career.

» STRENGTH AND WEAKNESSES

Strengths
With all-rounders Dhoni, Raina and Morkel in their side, Chennai have plenty of depth in all departments but particularly the batting. Three measured top-order players are followed by the powerful hitters that are Raina, Mike Hussey, Dhoni and Morkel in what looks a perfectly balanced batting line-up. In Dhoni they also have the best captain in the tournament, not only technically adept in Indian conditions but cool under pressure and able to quietly motivate the younger Indian players in the squad.

Weaknesses
The fast bowling department looks a little bare, especially when it comes to Indian bowlers. Doug Bollinger excelled for Chennai last year, his arrival sparking a turnaround which saw them go on to win the tournament, but he may struggle for support this time around. Lakshmipathy Balaji served them well in the first three years of the tournament as a strong, hit-the-deck sort of bowler, and his absence could be felt. Chennai do have options in Nuwan Kulasekara and Tim Southee, though, if they’re willing to drop an overseas middle-order batsman in order to strengthen the bowling.
