Deccan Chargers

From bottom of the table flops in 2008 to champions in 2009 and semi-finalists in 2010, the Deccan Charges have been at both ends of the spectrum in the space of three seasons.

They’ve undergone a complete revamp for edition four of the IPL after opting not to retain any of their international players. Not even the inspirational Adam Gilchrist was spared. Instead they spent big sums on Kumar Sangakkara, Cameron White, Kevin Pietersen, Dale Steyn and, erm, Dan Christian.

They have suffered a blow before the tournament started, though, with Pietersen ruled out with a hernia injury.

» STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES

Strengths
Amit Mishra and Pragyan Ojha are two quality spinners with international pedigree and they will no doubt enjoy bowling in favourable home conditions. Deccan are also able to call on Steyn, Ishant Sharma, Christian, Manpreet Gony and Harmeet Singh when it comes to pace. Steyn will no doubt lead the attack but if they can get Sharma to find some form then the Hyderabad franchise will have a feared bowling attack.
Weaknesses
The Chargers don’t have depth when it comes to batting and Pietersen’s injury-enforced absence will hit them very hard, while White will miss the first part of the series due to international commitments. They’re also a little light on quality Indian players, especially batsmen, so the quota of four overseas players per starting XI means they will have to constantly juggle their line-up. Shikhar Dhawan and Dwaraka Ravi Teja have played a fair few IPL games but they’re not really standout names in T20 cricket.
