Kings XI Punjab
The Kings XI Punjab were the woodenspooners of 2010 and, in need of a fresh start, traded in the likes of Yuvraj Singh, Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara ahead of the new season.
Their spending at the player auction included $1.4 million on David Hussey – the second most expensive foreign player – while Dinesh Karthik, Praveen Kumar and Piyush Chawla lead the local brigade.
The Mohali-based outfit, who also play a couple of home games in Dharamsala, have covered the loss of Stuart Broad and Dimitri Mascarenhas to injury by signing South African all-rounder Ryan McLaren, who joins a Kings XI squad captained by Adam Gilchrist and coached by Michael Bevan in his first season at the helm.

» STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES
There is a promising look to the Kings XI bowling attack, particularly one set to play the majority of their home games in Mohali where there is usually assistance for the seamers. Praveen Kumar and Ryan Harris will lead the line and both seamers have proven records in the IPL with a penchant for early wickets. Piyush Chawla’s leg-spin will also be a vital weapon for the men from Punjab, while David Hussey’s part-time off-spinners allow the Kings XI more flexibility amongst their bowling options.
Weaknesses
Gilchrist was an integral part of the Deccan Chargers’ successful campaign in 2009, but last season the former Aussie wicketkeeper registered just one score over 50, with an average of 18. A year later and he’s even further away from his international playing days and another season of poor form would heap the pressure on both his captaincy and the rest of the Kings XI batting line-up, as was the case with Deccan in 2010.
