Mumbai Indians

Like fellow 2010 finalists Chennai, Mumbai looked to retain the core of the team that served them well last time out. Having achieved this, Mumbai have a solid foundation in all disciplines, with the batting prowess of skipper Sachin Tendulkar backed up by the all-round explosiveness of Kieron Pollard and the complementary wizardry of Lasith Malinga and Harbhajan Singh.

The acquisition of Rohit Sharma and a host of talented non-capped Indian players will be important in ensuring the team will not have to rely heavily on its foreign stars. Based on the 2010 Champions League, Davy Jacobs looks a great buy, particularly as the South African can also keep wicket.

The presence of the mercurial Andrew Symonds is an interesting one, with the Australian’s ability to still perform at the highest level unknown.

» STENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES

Strengths
The Indians have considerable depth in most areas, which should stand them in good stead in a tournament of such an intense nature. Although untested in the IPL, Jacobs and Aidan Blizzard can competently hold matters together at the top of the order with the help of Tirumalasetti Suman, should Tendulkar not be available, while Symonds, James Franklin and Moises Henriques cover the role of back-up all-rounder.

Weaknesses
Perhaps the only area where one could criticise Mumbai is their lack of out-and out-pace to back up Malinga, with the loss of Zaheer Khan evident here. Should the Sri Lankan be injured, the likes of Munaf Patel, Franklin, Ali Murtuza and Henriques will need to step up and fill the void, with none of the quartet particularly express.
