Royal Challengers

The Royal Challengers Bangalore have been one of the more consistent teams in the last two years, losing in the 2009 final before reaching the last four in 2010. They also reached the semi-final of the T20 Champions League last year but, despite their relative success, have opted for a near total revamp of playing personnel ahead of IPL4.

Only two notable players have returned with the list of iconic discards including Rahul Dravid, Jacques Kallis and Kevin Pietersen to name just three. Coach Ray Jennings, however, stays and he will add tactical insight and discipline to a very talented squad who boast the capable leadership of Chief Mentor Anil Kumble and captain Daniel Vettori.

» STENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES

Strengths
The Royal Challengers have traded the age and experience of Kallis, Dravid and Kevin Pietersen for the quality and confidence of AB de Villiers and Tillakaratne Dilshan. The Indian trio of Virat Kohli, Saurabh Tiwary and Cheteshwar Pujara add an exciting dose of the best local batting talent on offer, which means that scoring runs should not be a problem for the Bangalore franchise.

Weaknesses
While they have a more than useful collection of seam options, with 21-year-old Abhimanyu Mithun complementing Zaheer Khan, Charl Langeveldt and Dirk Nannes, it is crucially in the spin department where the Royal Challengers’ attack is found wanting. Daniel Vettori is the only noteworthy slow-bowling specialist, and the fitness record of the New Zealander suggests that – despite being skipper – he won’t play every game of the hectic IPL schedule either.
